Presentation on the Life of Solomon Bayley with the Historic Village in Ocean View
Join the Historic Village in Ocean View for a presentation on the life of Solomon Bayley at Hall's Store Visitor and Education Center in Ocean View.
Presenter Marcos Salaverria, Education Director at Lewes Historical Society, will discuss the story of Solomon Bayley, a former Delaware slave on Wednesday, January 24th.
In 1825, Bayley authored the book that describes his enslavement and eventual liberation, along with that of his family members. The story's central chain of events begin when their enslaver sends Bayley and his family from Delaware and sells them in Virginia, in violation of Delaware state law. Bayley sues his enslaver seeking freedom for himself and his family. However, prior to the final court hearing, Bayley's enslaver has him kidnapped and imprisoned. Bayley escapes and eventually purchases freedom for himself and his wife and children. After slavery, he worked as a farmer and joined the Methodist church and ministry. Despite being nominally free, he and his wife emigrated to Liberia West Africa in 1831 to escape racial oppression and the constant threat of being kidnapped and re-enslaved. This event is sponsored by a grant from Coldwell Banker CARES to provide background and historical information on the impact of people of color in our area. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Coldwell Banker and to Anne Powell Del Vecchio for providing this very meaningful grant to the Historic Village in Ocean View such that we can bring this very important story to life.
